A few years back, a customer emailed me a question I could not fully answer on the spot. She asked if my candles were "non-toxic." I knew what I meant by that. Clean ingredients, no lead, nothing hidden. But I realized I had never actually looked into what that word is supposed to guarantee, legally speaking. So I dug in. What I found surprised me a little.

In short: the term "non-toxic" is not a regulated claim on candle labels. Any company can print it on a jar. What actually determines whether a candle is safe to burn comes down to the wick material, the wax type, and what is hiding inside the word "fragrance." This guide walks through all three, plus how to read a label like you actually know what you are looking at.

Why "Non-Toxic" Doesn't Mean What You Think It Means

This is what I found irritating once I was informed of it. Candles are not regulated by FDA in the same way as food or drugs. No official entity checks whether that sort of label claim is true before it's placed on a jar.

This doesn't mean all statements of this type are untrue. It simply indicates that the words do not constitute evidence. The words "non-toxic" do not necessarily mean a candle has no synthetic fragrance chemicals. A candle without a label might actually be purer. The label tells you what a company thinks you want to know. Does not always specify the contents of the jar.

So the question is not whether it is the jar, that uses that word. It is whether or not you can see for yourself what is within the candle. That's the moment when you are seeking to purchase non-toxic candles that actually come through the verification test, and it's a different question than reading the label at face value. 

The Lead Wick Problem, and Why It's Mostly Solved

Actually, this is part of a real regulatory story, so let's begin there.

Some candles in the United States sold prior to 2003 were fitted with a metal core wick that contained lead. The burning wick was held up in the wick stand (core). The question was what would happen when the flame got there. The burning of the wick emitted lead into the air and into the room.

Candles emitted some lead at rates higher than 3,000 micrograms per hour—more than seven times the rate the agency deemed unsafe for children, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found in its investigation. In 2003, the CPSC officially banned the manufacturing, importing and selling of any candle containing a lead core wick in the United States.

That ban is still in effect today. Legally sold candles in the U.S. should not have a lead core wick. This is very good news and one of the reasons that “lead free” is no longer a valid marketing statement. It is not a special feature, it's a minimum standard.

The wicks are now generally made from cotton, wood, paper cores or zinc and tin cores as a substitute for the lead. People often think of cotton and wood wicks as having a cleaner burn, as they don't have the metal core question in their minds. For instance, Farmhouse Kitchen candles are all cotton wick candles. 

What "Fragrance" Can Actually Be Hiding

That's where things get a bit tricky and the answer to a question no candle shopper ever asked.

Candles generally contain a blend of ingredients whose formulas are proprietary. The word fragrance, or parfum, can be used on a label without revealing any specific chemical compounds that make up the fragrance. Research has been collated by MADE SAFE, a nontoxic product certification program, and phthalates are a family of chemicals that frequently appear in synthetic fragrance formulations, at least in part because of the lack of requirement for further disclosure. 

Are Phthalates Always Present in Scented Candles?

Phthalates are not always in all scented candles. Many fragrance oils don't contain them! However, since the ingredient label is not required to state either way, it cannot be determined just by reading the jar.

There are a few things that come in handy. Purchase candles made with essential oils or fragrance oils that are phthalate-free. If it is not stated on the label, ask the maker. If the maker is using their own fragrance oils, in smaller quantities, they should be able to tell you that, rather than "trust me" and they should also be able to name the supplier, not just the generic "trust me" one. 

Wax Type and Soot: What the Research Actually Shows

There is a lot of blame being thrown around for the soot for "bad" candles and yes, there is a part to that, but it's more specific than many people realize.

The EPA says that candle soot is a byproduct of incomplete combustion. Wax type, dyed or heavily fragranced wax, and the length of the wick are some of the factors that influence the amount of soot a candle will produce. EPA has indicated one type of candle can produce up to one hundred times more soot than another depending on those factors.

It is commonly used in candles sold at mass market retailers, and creates more noticeable soot than other wicks that burn more cleanly, such as soy and coconut wax. However, a poor quality wick of any kind (even soybean) will flare and smoke if not properly trimmed. While it is important to choose the right wax, it is also important to take care of the wicks.

The wax type is one lever if you are looking to minimize soot in your home. The other is to cut the wick to about a quarter inch before each burn; it can be more important than it sounds. 

A Quick Wax Comparison

  • Paraffin: cheapest, most widely available, tends to soot the most

  • Soy: burns cleaner on average, renewable crop, softer scent throw

  • Coconut: burns cleaner, slower burn time, often blended with soy

  • Beeswax: naturally scented, burns slowly, can be pricier

Reading a Candle Label Like You Know What You're Looking At

Some other specific points to look for (in addition to a claim printed on the jar somewhere). When you are shopping for non-toxic candles, there are three things for you to find out – rather than relying on a single person's word.

Check the type of wick. It should indicate cotton, wood or paper cores. If the label doesn't have any reference to the wick whatsoever, then it's appropriate to ask directly.

Check the wax on the fruit. Soy, coconut, beeswax, or a mix of the three tend to burn cleaner than pure paraffin. If a label is reading "wax" without specifying, it's either a gimmick or the manufacturer is truly not aware, so that is not a good sign.

See if the perfume ingredient is listed anywhere other than "fragrance. A few brands specify the individual essential oils or state their perfume blends contain no phthalates. This kind of information typically indicates that the company has a first-hand experience with the product they're selling.

Look for dye. Some heavily dyed candles, particularly heavily saturated dyes, may use the dye to a degree that compromises their burn quality. As a general rule, undyed or lightly tinted candles will burn a bit cleaner, especially these in our Seasonal Spring Collection. 

Ventilation Matters More Than People Realize

This is a section that is always ignored and shouldn't be.

The EPA has guidance regarding indoor air quality which states that burning anything inside, including candles, puts particulate matter into the air in a closed place. One of the easiest ways to decrease accumulation of this particulate material over time is to break a window while a candle is lit.

A few more habits mean a lot as well. Candles burned for shorter periods of time than if they were burned continuously over many hours will reduce the amount of total particulate buildup. A trimmed wick will not make a bigger, fatter, smokier flame than necessary. It's not toxic if you don't do it once. It's a matter of cumulative exposure like with any indoor air habit. 

Common Myths About Non-Toxic Candles

A couple of points to clarify, as they seem to pop up all the time.

Myth: Soy wax candles don't leave soot. Soy will not smoke, on average, but every candle using a wick that has not been trimmed or has been too large will smoke, whether it is soy or paraffin wax.

Myth: If something is unscented, then it's automatically cleaner. Even though it is a fragrance, the type of wick and the type of candle wax still plays a role in soot and air quality in an unscented candle.

MYTH: If there is no soot, there is no problem with the candle. There are emissions that are not seen with the unaided eye, such as trace metals, which may be present in some wick materials. Clean flames are not necessarily clean as they release something into the air.

Myth: If it is labeled 'non-toxic' it has been tested and verified. This word is not regulated, as discussed above. It may represent a company's selection, but is not a promise from the lab. 

Mistakes People Make While Shopping for One

The largest is to rely on the copy on the label instead of the ingredient list. Candles are not always marketed with the same language as they are factually disclosed.

Another is the assumption that price equals quality! The more expensive the price, the more likely it will not have a cleaner wick or a perfume that is phthalate-free. There are lots of expensive candles that are ambiguous on both.

Not putting in a wick at all also leads to problems. The majority of these discussions are about wax and fragrance, but the wick is also of importance – particularly historically – as discussed in the lead wick problem above.

The last one is burning any candle continuously for hours without ventilation. A clean burning candle produces even more pollutants when it is burned longer and more frequently in a closed room. 

What I Actually Do in My Own Candle Making

Since people ask, here is my honest answer.

I use cotton wicks, sourced specifically because they skip the metal core question entirely. I use a soy wax blend rather than paraffin, partly for the cleaner burn and partly because it is a renewable crop. I do not think "non-toxic" is a magic word. I think it is a starting point for a longer conversation about what is actually in a product, and I would rather have that conversation directly than let a label do the talking for me.

A Simple Checklist Before You Buy

Whether you are looking through a shelf, or perusing an online retail, here's a quick way to skim through all the above without over-thinking it.

Inquire about the material of the wick. Cotton or wood, preferably, no ambiguous response.

What is the substance made of which the wax is? Not just wax – a specific name, soy, coconut, beeswax, or a named blend.

If there is fragrance listed, ask if the fragrance oils contain phthalates. An independent oil supplier will know the answer right away.

Write to the maker and ask the following questions: That responsiveness is as much a part of the answers as they are. If a shop will not answer the simplest questions about ingredients, they're saying something.

All of this doesn't take long, if you know what to ask. It simply means taking time to think about the purchase of a candle like you would when thinking about a purchase of skincare or food, and reading into the front of the label. 

Why This Matters More for Some Households Than Others

Not every household needs to worry about candle emissions the same amount, and it is worth saying that plainly instead of treating every burn like a crisis.

Homes with young children benefit the most from strict wick and fragrance scrutiny, given the historical lead exposure data covered earlier. Children spend more time close to the floor, where heavier particulates tend to settle, and their developing systems are more sensitive to airborne contaminants generally. For everyone else, the risk from an occasional, well ventilated candle burn is genuinely low. That does not mean ingredient transparency stops mattering. It just means the stakes vary by household, and it is fair to calibrate how much scrutiny feels necessary based on who is actually breathing that air regularly.

Look for a disclosed wick material. Look for a named wax type, not just "wax." Ask about fragrance sourcing if it is not listed. And remember that even a candle that genuinely burns clean benefits from a cracked window and a trimmed wick.
